Mahalapye traffic officer, assistant superintendent Kgosienalerona Sechoni confirmed the accident saying only one passenger escaped death.

“According to the police investigations, a Mazda 323 got out of control and overturned claiming lives of three males ranging between 24 and 41 years.

The other passenger, a woman aged 38 years who escaped death, is still nursing serious injuries she sustained in the accident at the Mahalapye Hospital,” said Sechoni.

He added that the vehicle was north bound and that the accident took place at around 6.30am. He further said police investigations on the matter are still ongoing.

“We do not have concrete evidence of what might have transpired, but we are still investigating the matter. Road accidents in our area of jurisdiction are now becoming worrisome than in other areas because many lives are being lost especially those of the youth,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sechoni said that they are investigating another accident, which happened at around 4.30am still on Sunday along Sefhare-Moshopha road claiming one life.

According to the police traffic boss, a Honda Fit motor vehicle, which had five occupants hit a horse and overturned claiming the life of a 36-year-old male passenger.

“One male passenger aged 28 is currently treated for serious injuries at Mahalapye Hospital whilst the other three passengers including the driver escaped the accident with minor injuries. The driver was a man while the other two passengers were women,” said Sechoni.

He further disclosed that the victims were coming from Serowe going to Moshopha.

Sechoni stated that from January 2016 to date, 41 lives have been lost in the Mahalapye area (thus including Dibete, Machaneng, Martins Drift) due to road accidents. He disclosed that over the weekend only, they lost 11 lives in their area of jurisdiction caused by road crashes.

“We are trying all we can as the police to try and caution people about the dangers of wrecklessness on our roads but it seems like our message is falling on deaf ears. People are continuing to over speed and drink while driving along the A1 road though it is one of the busiest roads in the country,” he said.

Since January this year, the police have so far recorded 41 lives lost through road crashes in the Mahalapye area.

The latest accidents come just after seven lives were lost on Saturday in a horrific accident involving a 65-seater Gabz Link bus and an Audi sedan six kilometres from Mahalapye village heading north.
