Back at the top: TAFIC will finish the season at the top

It took TAFIC a stifling one hour and 15 minutes to open the score sheet in a frantic derby that was crammed with crunchy tackles. GNT took the game to TAFIC but wasted numerous chances in front of goals. A brace from Kemoreng Batisani and a cheeky last minute free kick from Molebatsi Sekepe ensured Matjimenyenga punished their wasteful neighbours and leapfrogged BR Highlanders to finish the first round at the summit of the table.

In an interview after the encounter TAFIC mentor, Blessing Moyo acknowledged a poor display against a lacklustre GNT but was happy with the results.

“We would say it was bad but there is no bad win. I must commend my boys for the spirit of never giving up. This was a very closely-contested fight and we escaped with a hard fought-for three points. At least it is a Christmas present for our supporters,” he said.

Moyo said teams are getting strong with every game and he anticipates a difficult campaign in the second round. He said they are looking to bolster their squad in the January transfer window. “The past two games (against Real Movers and GNT) were signals of how tough the teams are coming at us and it will not get any easier in the second round. Luckily the window is opening and we will not sit on our laurels. We are going to bolster some positions and take our fight to the wire if it may be,” Moyo added.

Highlanders ensured they remain neck on neck with TAFIC on 26 points with the latter two goals better. Highlanders had temporarily taken the summit of the table with 1-0 win overMaun Tigers in an encounter played in Maun on Sunday morning. Motlakase Power Dynamos remained third after Real Movers held them to a draw in an away game in Selebi-Phikwe. ECCO City Greens, who are finding their winning formula, continued their climb on the league table with a 2-0 win against FC Satmos, which sent them one position up to fourth.

Sua Flamingoes fell to fifth after Chobe United beat them 1-0 in Kasane. David Bright’s Morupule Wanderers suffered another setback against TASC with a 2-0 away loss on Saturday. The second round of the league is expected to resume on the third week of January next year.
