Tiro was an established member at Rollers, and his death shook the football family, with concerns over the welfare of the players at most teams.

A month later, local football was once again, mourning the death of another player, as Mahalapye’s Santa Green player, Leatile ‘Satter’ Setabosigo also collapsed and died at training.

An even darker cloud enveloped local football in January this year, when seven players belonging to a Gumare Constituency Tournament team, perished in a road accident on their way to a match.

Five died on the spot, while two others lost their lives later on, in hospital.

A fortnight ago, tragedy struck again as Sua Flamingoes striker, Lovemore Murirwa, on his way to training, died a few kilometres from Sowa.

Two other teammates, Alfred Motiki and Ogopotse Tshule are still in critical condition following the accident, which claimed Murirwa’s life. Their future involvement in football is now in doubt.

Before the football fraternity could come to terms with Murirwa’s death, in the early hours of Monday, Morupule Wanderers’ left back, Lesego ‘Ricalmer’ Matoteng, died on the spot when his car overturned at Radisele. This means Botswana football has lost a full starting team in just 18 months, with road accidents and cardiac arrest, the two causes.
