Guitarist Katuta takes young musicians under his wing

Tonight Katuta alongside Motswafere will perform at The No.1 Ladies Coffee House in Thapong Visual Arts Centre.
Katuta who not so long ago shared the stage with Oliver Mtukudzi at Mascom Live Sessions told Arts & Culture that he was asked to do the show by the patrons of the place.
He said as a result, he realised that a lot of young talented artists do not have the platform to showcase their skills.
“I decided that whenever I am billed to perform, I should get one promising artist. Of course they are many, but we have to start with someone,” he said.
Katuta said it is something that other established artists should do. “For the first time I am taking Motswafere. I have worked with him before when he was recording one of his songs and I discovered more from him,” he said.
Katuta said if Batswana give Motswafere a chance, he could sell the country and his generation.
Looking back, the guitarist who has in the past composed major hits said he has now made Botswana his home ever since moving here in 2002.
The talented artist who came to Botswana at the invitation of kwasa-kwasa musician, Jeff Matheatau at the time said he has worked with living and departed Batswana artists and has recorded more than 400 materials since.
“I am still working with local artists, some are being played on radio even though they do not credit us,” he highlighted. Katuta said people always recognise his guitar work in a song.
“It’s a great achievement because we learn many techniques of guitars from role models. I always try to perfect my art by bringing in more materials,” he said.
Katuta said that although he plays rhythm, lead and bass guitars, he specialises in lead guitar when he is on stage. The artist who halted the marketing of his first album on the market in 2010, two weeks after its release said he is now working on his second album.
“I removed my first album on the market because of piracy,” he recalled.
He said his album is ready and it will just be instrumentals with no vocals. Katuta said he would be sampling some of the song at tonight’s show. The show will run from 6pm until 10pm and the ticket is sold at P100.
