The stage was set for an entertaining night at another sold-out show, but the performers failed to produce the deeds on the other end.

Motlha opened the show for the South African group.  Although the Mmamotse hitmaker is a fan favourite, his performance fell short of convincing as he spent most of the time talking than singing.  A superstar in the making, but his Friday evening performance was not what he promised it to be.  A lot was expected from the young man whose rise to stardom has been sharp, but unfortunately the Botswanacraft Market proved ‘too big’ for him.

Having recently reunited and announced that they are working on a new project after many years of separation, a lot was expected from the Bongo Maffin group as the headliner.

Expectations were high because their local fans had missed seeing them in action for many years. But the group failed to move the crowd, which had waited anxiously.

While members Thandiswa Mazwai, Stoan Seate, Speedy and Jah Seed looked energetic and lively, one could not pick whether the revellers did not appreciate their music or were just not in touch.

It was just a dull affair as most of them just stood there watching, giving a sense that they want more from the performers.

Performing with a live band, the group sang their most popular songs such as Thathi Sgubhu, The Way Kungakhona, Kura Uone.

They also performed their recent released single titled Harare. Although the song has not yet received much airplay, it gives one a sense that the group has not lost its identity and that its excellence is not defined by era.  All in all, it was not the best Mascom Live Sessions we have seen in a while.

While on stage, the group also took time to pay tribute to fallen South African Hip Hop star, Jabulani ‘HHP’ Tsambo who passed on recently. They sang one of HHP’s most popular songs Harambe, taken off his fourth studio album titled O Mang Reloaded.

Early this year, the group announced that they were in the studio for the first time since 2005, when they released Reconstruction and marked their return with the Harare single.  On stage on Friday, Stoan said that that they are still working on their next project.
