Prisons target boxing championship

The club seeks to reclaim their 2016 glory when they won the championship with 14 points under the guidance of Ugandan native, Buwenbo Sande Mpigi.
Mafika was in the second spot with 12 points and Eastern Military Garrison (EMG) was in third place with nine points. It is not going to be easy sailing for The Warders because BMC has proven to be strong contenders. Prisons captain, Mmusi Tswiigi said they are ready for the competitions.
He said the team has more boxers who were recruited from Botswana Integrated Sports Association (BISA) games. There are three veterans being Mmoloki Thipe (60kg), Atang Mosenke (75kg) and Tswiigi (79kg).
“The youngsters are promising. They have been doing well in the inter club competitions. The disadvantage is that Mosenke and I are struggling to find opponents,” he said.
“Sometimes we have one bout and qualify for final. Other clubs have many boxers in lightweight categories and that is where they accumulate more points.”
Tswiigi said last year they failed to retain the championship because it was not clear if the competition was going to be held.
He said some boxers lost interest when it was decided last minute for the competition to precede. Prisons coach, Malefo Moeti said the preparations started on a low note, but they worked hard and they are now ready. He said they have fielded boxers from 49kg up to 79kg.
“The team is in camp until the final. It is a new squad and the only two from 2016 are Mosenke and Tswiigi. The young boxers are excited to be part of us and getting opportunity to fight in a big stage,” he said.
BMC coach, Dinners Sikele said his charges are ready for battle. He said last year there was no time to prepare the boxers, but this time around he had a flexible schedule to train in the morning and evening.
Some of the boxers expected to gain points for BMC are George Molwantwa (56kg), Joel Kgorope (52kg), Lesole Thekiso (49kg). Sikele said there is nothing that can stop his stable from winning the championship. He said he is also fielding two girls. The finals for the championship are next weekend in Gaborone.
