Taking a break: Long serving FIFA development officer, Mamelodi is eyeing a break from football

Mamelodi who has served local football for many years has seen the game transform significantly. He is currently FIFA development officer.

“I am not relocating with the office as I want to take a different route from football even though for now I have not really thought on what I am going to be doing,” he said.

Quizzed on whether he has interest in serving local football in the future, Mamelodi said: “I do not know. I have not thought about it and there are people who are currently serving it, but I am available for help at any time if they need it.”

He said he believes he has done his part as he has served football for many years.

The FDO has been in Botswana for almost 16 years and its tenure has reached the culmination this year. Mamelodi said he does not think the FDO relocation will affect Botswana’s football progression.

“There should be no impact because the BFA will continue using the office from South Africa. It is their office as well,” Mamelodi stated.

He highlighted that BFA utilised the FDO during its period in Botswana through the three goal projects at Lekidi, the transformation of Molepolole Sports Complex and the Grass roots football programme.

On the other hand, Footballers Union Botswana secretary general Kgosana Masaseng said he does not think the relocation of the FDO is going to have any impact on local football.

He said even though the offices were in Gaborone, BFA had to go under normal application process for the world governing body projects. Masaseng said he believes Mamelodi will not ditch football.

“I think he is still going to be active in football. He is an experienced administrator and I heard FIFA is still trying to persuade him to occupy a different position,” Masaseng said.
