Inaugural Gaborone African Food Festival is here

The event will be held under the theme, ‘African togetherness’ and it will take attendees through a voyage of the diverse African food culture. They will be offered the occasion to see, taste and experience a wide variety of organic and authentic dishes from Southern African zone, North African zone and West African zone.

Speaking during a media briefing yesterday, GAF representative Harriet Nkonjera said the whole idea behind the event is to bring together everyone and learn about general culture which includes food and music.

“Food is part of our culture and we want to cultivate the spirit of botho through this event,” she said. She also said the food festival will contribute positively and extend more tolerance towards indigenous foods. Nkonjera said the event will provide a platform for people from all walks of life to understand each other’s culture and taste local food. “We introduce dishes like seswaa to non-nationals and in return they will learn more about our culture,” she highlighted.

“We will express our love through food and music,” she said.

For his part, another GAF representative, Fred Maunze said they have engaged three professional chefs with vast experience on cooking traditional and exotic dishes. “Their arsenal of experience will give us the perfect blend required for such an event,” he said.

Maunze said they will have some tantalising spit braai themed, ‘once off single line buffet’. Maunze said they will provide craft beers and wine lounge offering good quality craft beers and fine wines. He said they have partnered with marketers and distributors of major wine estates in Southern Africa, Fine Brands.

He said they will also have a cigar and hubby lounge, which shall be selling quality cigars from all over the world and also renting out hubblies with flavours. “We shall also have a coffee lounge for hot beverage lovers,” he said.

The event will also provide attendees with mekoro rides and a five-aside celebrity football match of radio personalities against musicians. As part of the event, Dramaboi, Doctor Tawanda, E.P.I.C, DJ Cupid, DJ Ricky Lamar, Sulu (Zimbabwe), Chomza (SA) will provide the entertainment for the day. The tickets for children (including food) are sold at P100, adults (without food) P200, adults (with food) P250 and VIP P750.
