Onlookers said one person died on the spot whilst two others were confirmed dead upon arrival at the Selebi-Phikwe Hospital.   Serule Police Station Commander, superintendent Lesole Mosimane said the accident happened on Saturday at around 10am.  He said the mini-bus was travelling to Selebi-Phikwe while the private car was coming from the Selebi-Phikwe side.

He added that their preliminary investigations reveal that the accident was caused by the driver of the private car who was overtaking, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming bus.  “The three passengers that died were all in the Runx that was carrying five passengers.  One died on the spot while the other two died at Selebi-Phikwe government hospital.

All (deceased) passengers are male,” he said.  Mosimane further said that the mini-bus had about 25 passengers on board, adding that five passengers from the bus suffered severe injuries and were rushed to Selebi-Phikwe Hospital together with the three surviving passengers from the Runx.  One survivor of the horrific accident, related to The Monitor that they left Francistown for Selebi-Phikwe at around 9am on Saturday.   “We were on a 25-seater bus, heading for Phikwe.

The bus was full house. Just about five kilometres after the Damuchujenaa turn off the Toyota RunX came charging at us,” he said.   He added: ”The RunX was overtaking the other car and then the driver lost control and came straight (in)to us”.   The survivor told The Monitor yesterday that the bloody accidents caused a lot of traffic along the road.  He said that the RunX had about five passengers in it.

“We managed to assist four of them, but the front seat passenger was trapped inside. It took about 40 minutes to rescue her,” he said.   The survivor, however, did not shy away from shaming the police for arriving at the scene late.  He said that the police only managed to arrive at the scene an hour after they had been called even though they were just under 45 kilometers away from Phikwe.
