Khama was addressing multitudes of BDP women who came from all the four corners of the country to the inaugural three-day 2016 National Women‘s Wing General Assembly held in Mahalapye.

The General Assembly was held under the theme ‘Our Empowerment, Our Strength’.

He stated that it was critical that both Women’s and Youth wings are empowered through having such platforms as the General Assembly that would guarantee them decision-making processes pertaining to some of their key issues and that of the party as a whole.

“This is certainly a historic moment because it ushers in a new era of general assemblies for both of Women’s and Youth wings. Most importantly, it is to underline that women have always played a prominent role in the affairs of this part,y turning it into the formidable force it is today. I therefore wish to take this opportunity to encourage you to donate paraphernalia that would show in detail the trail of your roles,” he said.

He added that BDP has been triumphant in the past five decades because of the substantial role played by women and also they make the majority of the population within the membership of the party, thus cementing the need to stand up and indicate their willingness to be part of the leadership.

“We will also do our best to encourage them as I have already done on numerous occasions, including through the special election process.”

He added: “However, on the whole role, it is critical to mention that for you to be afforded roles within the political sphere. It is crucial that you also take seriously that responsibility and the need to support each other.  Women across all sectors of society need to take responsibility for their own empowerment, perhaps now even more, going forward than was done over the years”.

Khama also noted that at government level ,BDP is committed to the advancement of women as shown by its policies and programmes.
