The duo, Modisakgotla Keganeditse, 24, and Moabi Morwalela, 21, are alleged to have robbed Grace Keakantse, 70, of a mobile phone worth P249 at her place of residence in Area W during the wee hours of November 17, 2018 before allegedly proceeding to rape and murder her.

Prosecutor Sesafeleng Dijeng from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) informed the court that the matter was heading to court for assessment of evidence.

“We assessed the evidence, but we are still awaiting photographic evidence taken at the scene of the crimes, statement of the investigating officer and results from the police forensic laboratory. We therefore, apply that the accused should be further remanded in custody,” she said.

The accused, who cut forlorn figures when they appeared, told the court that they had nothing to say in relation to the application made by the prosecution for their further remand in custody.

Magistrate Kose Makobo remanded them in custody until January 7, 2019 for another mention. Interestingly, residents of Area W who have developed a keen interest in the matter filled the court to the brim just like when the accused were arraigned in court after they were charged with the three offences.

The police even barred some of them from entering the court because it was completely full. The duo’s appearance in court coincided with the day that residents of Area W were supposed to have handed a petition to the District Commissioner (DC) in her office, which is situated at Ntshe House where the magistrate’s court and other government offices are also located.

However, the residents did not manage to hand the petition to the DC as she was said to be in Gaborone attending to other government errands.

Chief amongst the myriad of problems that the residents are complaining about is the issue of prostitution and the seemingly increasing criminal activities in their ward, the latest being the gruesome murder of Keakantse in November.
