The rain started pouring on Saturday night, but not heavily.  It was later on at around 3pm that the thunderstorms became violent.  The downpour resumed with gusty winds and then dropped heavy hailstones that shuttered car windows for close to an hour.

Heavy thundershowers ensued after the hailstorm and caused flooding mostly on the roads around the village and left some homesteads and the bus rank submerged in water.

The A1 Highway that passes through the village was momentarily closed, the Mahalapye Police Station Commander Isaac Mamadi confirmed.  He said they were out on the roads and around the village to assess the damage.

“But the A1 Highway around the Cashbuild circle was flooded and unusable.  Vehicles had to use a single lane. I can also confirm that some homesteads are submerged in water, in fact, the entire Mahalapye is flooded,” he said.

He noted that they have not received so many reports, but judging by what they has seen he anticipates a lot of devastation in the area.

“It is still raining and if it similarly continues there is going to be even more damage. Power cuts continue and it could be due to damaged or fallen power poles,” he said.
