Four Rape Cases In Two Days

Police have identified most of the cases as date rape with perpetrators often being casual friends, who would have met the victims at entertainment places.

Officer Commanding (OC) senior superintendent Counsel Moyo told The Monitor that investigations is such cases give the police a headache as the perpetrators would claim to have had consent from the alleged victims, who later turn around and accuse the aggrieved of extortion.

“We are currently investigating four cases of rape, which occurred on Thursday morning and Friday night on different occasions,” Moyo said.

He said on Thursday morning at around 11am they received a report from a 21-year-old woman residing in Mmopane who claimed to have been given a lift, after boarding off a combi, by two men who later raped her.

“She said whilst she was walking home the two men came from behind with a car, offered her a lift but she was shocked to see the car changing direction and they drove back to Mogoditshane where they took turns raping her,” Moyo said.

Moyo said on Saturday they made a breakthrough and arrested the two suspects both aged 33 and have been charged with one count of rape each.

“Since their arrest the duo has been in police custody helping the police with their investigations and will today appear before Broadhurst Magistrate’s Court to faces rape charges,” Moyo said.

Moyo said they are currently looking for a suspect in another rape incident, which occurred last Friday night in Mogoditshane.

“On Friday night we received another rape report from a 30-year-old woman who claimed to have been raped by a man after she asked him to drop her at home from Botshabelo bar in Mogoditshane,” Moyo said.

Moyo said the victim claims she thought the Toyota Vits that was parked in front of the bar was a cab.

“She said she thought the car was a cab but was shocked when the driver drove her to the bush where he raped her before he abandoned her. The suspect is still on the run, but the victim said if she saw him again she would be able to identify him,” Moyo said.

Moyo said still on Friday night another woman aged 38 came to report a rape stating to have meet a man at Trekkers nightclub in Mogoditshane with whom they spent hours together.

“She said later on the man told her that his money was finished suggesting they should go and withdraw from the nearest ATM machine. She said they went to withdraw cash, but afterwards the man drove off with her to the bush and raped her.  The victim said after raping her the suspect drove off and left her in the bush, ” Moyo said, stating that they are looking for the suspect who is still at large.

He said the victim said she does not know the suspect as it was their first time to meet, but can identify him if she were to see him again.

In another incident Moyo said Naledi police are investigating another rape incident that occurred on Friday night in which a woman in her 20s was sexually assaulted.

“She said that she was from the bar with her boyfriend and her boyfriend went with her to his friend’s place where he later asked for accommodation and spent the night. She said that whilst asleep she was awaken by someone being intimate with her and was shocked to see his boyfriend’s friend on top on her,” Moyo said, stating that the woman later reported the matter to the police.

Asked where the victim’s boyfriend was when the incident occurred Moyo said he told them that he was outside the house smoking. He went on to state that investigations to establish what really transpired are ongoing.
