Olopeng said the facility to be built in Tutume is one of the 10 community sport fields earmarked for construction during the financial year 2018-2019.

He stated that thus far, land has been allocated, and the Tutume Sub District Council, as the implementing partner in the project, is still finalising the designs and the other

logistics to facilitate the implementation of the project.

“In the meantime, an invitation to tender for the construction of stands is currently running and will close on December 21, 2018.

Engagements with other stakeholders on the technical components such as the football pitch are ongoing to ensure that the facility is of acceptable standards,” Olopeng said. His response followed a question by Member of Parliament for Nkange, Edwin Batshu who asked the minister to appraise Parliament on progress made towards the construction and delivery of the Isaac Makwala Sport Field.

Batshu has long requested government to start with the Isaac Makwala Sport complex when the former president Ian Khama named it after the living legend last year.

The sports complex will honour Makwala’s spectacular and exclusive performance, zeal and determination at the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) championships when representing the country, as said by Khama last year.

Moreover the stadium is said to be the first to be built amongst others in line with government’s plans to build sport complexes nationwide to bolster sport in each constituency.

When reached for comment, Makwala brushed off questions saying that he does not want to speak on anything relating to the progress of the sports field.
