Morupule mine employee drowns at Christmas party

The Serowe native had joined his colleagues at the recreational club, and they imbibed too much alcohol at a party that started around 2pm during the fateful day.

It was reported that at dusk he was involved in an unruly argument with one of his colleagues and were both ushered by the security out of the premises.

They went their separate ways and the deceased returned to the party later in the evening.

According to preliminary reports from the local police, he was seen heading for the swimming pool that is in the premises of the recreational club.

At the time he was in the company of one woman that was working for the catering company engaged at the party.  Palapye Police deputy station commander, Kelebeletse Letsholo said the inebriated man was swimming alone when he met his fate.

She said the incident was reported to the mine’s scuba divers who responded rapidly, but were late, and their immediate cardiopulmonary resuscitation attempts could not help.

“The incident happened around 11pm.  When the police arrived, it was too late.  The scuba divers had tried to resuscitate him, but with no luck,” Letsholo said, adding that from the preliminary evidence they don’t suspect any foul play.

“From the evidence that we have gathered so far, it was a case of drowning,” she said.

The police assistant superintendent said the deceased was taken to Palapye Primary Hospital where he was certified dead upon arrival.  She said the deceased body was at the hospital morgue waiting for the postmortem.

“Our investigations continue.  We are trying to identify the woman he was with to help us with the investigations, while we wait for the postmortem,” she said.
