Policeman who shot eight-year boy arraigned

The policeman, Molemisi Ikalafeng, 48, allegedly killed the boy on Monday morning at Tatisiding.

Ikalafeng was not asked to plead to the offence when he appeared before Magistrate Game Mooketsi on Wednesday.

He is currently remanded in custody on a holding charge of murder.

He allegedly killed the boy with the gun while he was on duty looking for a dangerous criminal at Tatisiding.

The prosecutor in the matter Assistant Superintendent Gaamangwe Kebinakgabo told the court to reserve plea in the case because investigations have just commenced.

He also said that it would be prudent for Ikalafeng to be remanded in custody for his safety because some members of the public are angry about what happened and may harm him if he is granted bail at this stage.

When responding to what the prosecution said, Ikalafeng pleaded with court to send him to Selibe-Phikwe Prison for his safety.

He told the court that he was investigating cases of some people who are on remand at the Francistown State Prison who may harm him if he is incarcerated in Francistown.

Mooketsi then acceded to the accused and prosecution and remanded Ikalafeng in custody until January 7 for another mention.
