Meet the new LSB chairperson

 

Diba who is a partner at Thabiso Tafila Attorneys takes over from senior counsel, Kgalalelo Monthe.

In a brief interview, Diba confirmed his chairpersonship and laid a few of the things that will be his area of focus during his tenure.

“I confirm that I am the new chairperson of the Law Society of Botswana.

Obviously the new council is yet to meet and discuss its goals and roadmap. We are also yet to meet with our principals, the members, for them to direct us,” he said.

However, Diba explained notwithstanding the latter he believes that his council will focus on a number of issues, amongst them reviving the youth forum through which they hope to address the interests of young lawyers and also the senior attorneys forum through which they need to engage with the senior attorneys.

“We believe that the integrity of the society is, to a considerable extent, affected by the involvement in or disengagement from the activities of the society by senior attorneys,” he explained.

He further noted that engagement with the northern bar would be visited, as a way to better understand the peculiar interests of our members based in the northern region.

He also mentioned that the issue of public interest would be mandatory such as their interactions with members of the public and the amendment of the Legal Practitioners Act.

Diba beat other candidates by 136 votes while his vice chair, Mboki Chilisa, gained 130 votes.

The new committee also includes Martin Dingake, Solomon Plaatjie, Bonolo Selelo, Setso Mokoti and Chedza Ntobedzi.
