Eventful weekend as codes conclude year

The Botswana Chess Federation (BCF) will host the Dr Marape 2016 Africa Schools championship preparatory tournament. The competition starts tomorrow and ends on Sunday at Bokamoso Junior Secondary School. The African Schools tournament will be held in Lusaka, Zambia next month.
The weekend tournament will be used to prepare the Botswana youth team that will participate at the championship.
BCF spokesperson, Keenese Katisenge said for players to qualify for the weekend tournament they should be between seven and 17 years of age so that they give the national team a practice. The tournament is sponsored by Dr Marape Marape and his family.
The team: Under Seven: Mhate Junior (boy) and Laone Mashoboro (girl); Under Nine: Candidate Master Iphazha Masala (boy), Thuto Mpene (boy) and Atang Mosweu (girl); Under 11: Tefo Pitlagano (boy), Refilwe Gabatshwarwe (girl) and WCM Naledi Marape (girl); Under 13: Gideon Masaiti (boy), Botlhe Lekang (boy), Marape Marape Junior (boy), Lame Mhate (girl) and Ketshepile Ruth Otisitswe (girl); Under 15: Tshepo Monare (boy), WCM Besa Masaiti (girl); Under 17: Thabo Elias (boy) and Londani Tamuhla (girl).
Botswana Rackets Squash Association (BRSA) hosts the Senn Foods Under-19 national junior squash championship. The tournament kicks off today and ends on Sunday in Gaborone.
BRSA officer, Batlang Sosome said the participants are from Selebi-Phikwe, Francistown and Gaborone clubs. He said the event is a wrap up of their activities for the year. Sosome said the event is a practice session for three players; Theo Pelonomi, Angel Otshabeng and Leungo Katse who will be competing in the UK Open in January.
The Botswana Golf Union (BGU) is closing their year by hosting the Northern Open championship in Francistown. The championship is divided into A-Division with handicap 0-9, B-Division for players with handicap 10-18 and C-Division for 17-24 handicaps. The championship follows the awarding of certificates to three professionals, Joseph Marudu, Schoolboy Thekiso and Trazinah Marudu who completed their teaching diplomas.
Francistown will also host the Botswana Kofukan Federation national youth and senior championship tomorrow at the Civic Centre. The championship will have team kata and kumite contests with five Kofukan regional structures: the north, north west, central, west and south and each region facing each other. Each region fields one team per category but as many participants in individual categories. The championship is the last event of the year for Kofukan.
