During the same period in 2017, the director of traffic said 29 deaths were recorded out of 24 crashes leaving road traffic accidents being the leading cause of deaths in the country.

“One accident in which many people lost their lives happened on December 29, 2018, 45 kilometres from Pandamatenga in which a Toyota Quantum knocked from behind a trailer which was towed by a truck while the driver tried to overtake the truck as a result the combi caught fire and six people lost their lives,” said the police.

In an interview with Mmegi the director of traffic, assistant commissioner Katlholo Mosimanegape said majority of the accidents were single accidents mostly due to loss of control of the car.

He stated that police have discovered that majority of motorists are usually involved in road accidents as a result of over-speeding, distraction mostly caused by the use of mobile phones and drink and driving.

'This usually divert drivers' attention and they end up losing control of the car. They mostly do so without taking into consideration road traffic signs,' Mosimanegape said.

He said if majority of drivers could have been more responsible none of the accidents could have happened.
