He finished the 331km between Lima to Pisco in 1:16:02 hours. The 32-year-old is making his debut in the competition, becoming the second Motswana to take part in race after Vincent Crosbie achieved the feat in 2017.
'Day one done and dusted, I had so much fun, it was really cool. It was nerve wrecking getting off the line this morning. Everything went well, I had such a good time on the bike, cruised so smoothly, navigation was not hard as I thought it would be and came in 43rd (position) for the day. I'm relieved to get the first stage out the way and feel like I can just put my head down and have fun today,' Branch posted on Facebook.
Branch is one of the three Africans competing at this year's edition. South African Kenneth Gilbert finished 40th in 1:15:18 hours while Stuart Gregory came in 84th position in a time of 1:30:43. For the first time, the race will be held within Peru rather than before when the terrain ran though Argentina and Bolivia. The race will end on January 17th.
