This comes as a response to perpetrators who abuse social media as sexual exploitation tool.

Makgato said she is deeply disturbed by the reports of sexual violence coming from Batswana.

She wrote, “as a mother and a leader, I cannot bear the thought of a girl child or any women suffering from sexual assaults at the hands of any man. I am especially pained by the fact that many women and girls suffer in silence”.

Her concern follows the trending social media posts, where women are exposing men who attempted and raped them. According to the complainants, perpetrators normally drug them before rape. In some instances, men intoxicate women at bars as a ticket for free sex.

Makgato, who is also the chairperson of the Botswana Democratic Party Women’s Wing, implored victims to report such cases.

“I wish to offer my personal assistance to ensure that the current reports are thoroughly investigated,” she said.

She added it was plausible that Batswana are speaking in one voice hence the need for sexual offenders registry is increasing with each passing day. “To men and boys, learn self control. Let’s stay united and end sexual violence altogether,” Makgato said.

Botswana Police Service has recently recorded 109 rape cases during festive season from December 21, 2018 to January 3 this year. According to investigations most rape cases happened at different places where festivities were held. “This is a worrisome factor as rape is one of the violent and intrusive crimes,” the police said in a statement.
