BNSC ordered to account for BOT5O funds

Appearing before the parliamentary committee on statutory bodies and state enterprises yesterday, the commission was told to provide full proof of how the funds were used.
The committee chairperson, Samson Moyo Guma requested the BNSC to provide confirmation that there was a tender issued and what services were provided.
He said the internal audit suggests that the commission is poor in procurement. He said after receiving the full details, the BNSC through its accounting officer, Kabelo Mmono and chief executive officer, Falcon Sedimo will be called again to give clarity.
Meanwhile, the BNSC has consistently received a grant of P54 million annually since 2012, Sedimo told the committee yesterday.
Sedimo said this is despite the fact that their budgets are way above the figure. He said they last provided a budget of around P100 million but still received P54 million because of the financial challenges facing the government.
Member of Parliament for Mochudi West, Gilbert Mangole wondered whether it was not for the fact that the BNSC was under-spending the money allocated to them. However, Sedimo said their budget always exceeds the amount given despite the fact that they also received around P37 million in the last year from other sponsors.
He said they distribute around P23 million to the sporting codes for direct use on their projects and activities. He stated that despite all the financial challenges, they have every reason to celebrate some achievements in the first phase of their Vision 2028, which ends next month. “We definitely have something to celebrate. In 2012 we won our first silver medal at the Olympics through Nijel Amos,” he said. He added that other young athletes like Karabo Sibanda are also coming up well.
He said some of the athletes are products of the school of excellence, which will do even better with improved funding.
Sedimo admitted before the committee that the events that led to the late finish of last season’s beMOBILE Premiership season might have dented the image of football in the country.
He said despite not being able to measure it, the events might have scared potential sponsors into football until the dust settles.
