Elderly woman's murder accused denied bail again

The accused, Modisakgotla Keganeditse, 24, and Moabi Morwalela, 21, are alleged to have robbed Grace Keakantse, 70, of a mobile phone worth P249 at her place of residence in Area W during the wee hours of November 17, 2018 before proceeding to rape and murder her.  One of the accused tried to regain his liberty, but his efforts did not bear any fruit.

The prosecutor in the case, Sesafeleng Dijeng of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) told Magistrate Kaveri Kapeko that some exhibits in the matter have been sent to the police forensic laboratory in Gaborone for examination.

She, therefore, pleaded with the court to remand the accused in jail for a further 14 days to allow the police to finish their investigations.

Asked if he had anything to say concerning the application made by the prosecution, Keganeditse pleaded with the court to grant him bail because his small child has been suffering ever since he was remanded in custody.

Keganeditse further said: “I am losing my livestock, especially chickens ever since I was incarcerated last year. May I, therefore, be given a chance to go and look after my livestock?” Morwalela told the court that he had nothing to say in relation to the application made by the state.  Regarding their bail application, Kapeko asked the prosecution how long it would take for examination of exhibits at the police laboratory to be completed.

Dijeng responded thus: “The examination of the exhibits normally takes about six weeks, but now two weeks will be enough to complete the examinations”.

Subsequently, Kapeko remanded the accused in custody until January 21, 2019.  He also advised them to apply for bail before the substantive magistrate in the matter during their next mention.

As in his previous court appearances, Keganeditse hurled insults at journalists in the court covering the story. He threatened to harm the journalists once he makes bail.
