Mabaila, who has made no secret in previous interviews with Mmegi about his close relations with Khama, is said to be the man that the ruling party wants.
However, insiders say the former Mogoditshane MP Patrick Masimolole is likely to contest also. Party insiders however say Mabaila is the favourite to win the BDP primaries.
This does not come as a surprise with Mabaila having made no secret about his desires to join active politics.
The 28-year-old Ministry of Land Management, Water and Sanitation Services principal officer 1, is however still a government employee. Reached for comment, Mabaila was non-committal on whether he will be contesting under the BDP ticket. The ex-Botswana Defence Force (BDF) soldier could only say: “All will be revealed in due time, I promise”.
Mabaila came to prominence when he was mentioned in the notorious Asparagus exposé. The man’s lavish life also came to question when it was exposed that he was appointed to his post as the principal investigation officer 1 at the MLH with a bogus university qualification.
According to Mabaila’s Linkedin’s profile, he was a student at the university from 2006 to 2009. He says in his profile that he completed his degree when he was still a junior army officer with the BDF. “…Learning as a distance learner student, I didn’t have an opportunity to interact with the students and lecturers from the university (sic),” he wrote. The Linkedin account reflects that Mabaila only has a single qualification, that being from Belford.
