On July 30, 2018 in Block 3, Gaborone Kerekang’s boyfriend, Simon Badisa Kgowe allegedly murdered her, cut off her head and cast aside her body at Maratanang ward in Tlokweng.

Theories were abound amongst law enforcement officers, the media and the public as to where her head could possibly be and what really transpired on that fateful day.  However, to date, the police are still to locate Kerekang’s missing head.

Asked to update the public on the search, Botswana Police Service’s (BPS) director of crime intelligence, Nunu Lesetedi told The Monitor that investigation into the matter is still ongoing.

“The case is still open, we are still in search of Kerekang’s missing head, up until we have retrieved it that is when we will stop the search.

Murder cases like these remain open for as long as we have not established full detailed evidence to close the case,” Lesetedi said. The hype surrounding the case has since disappeared as members of the public have lost interest in attending court sessions like after Kerekang’s boyfriend Kgowe was arrested.

During his first few mentions crowds would fill Extension II Magistrate’s Court to its rafters calling for Kgowe not to be released on bail before the head is recovered, but this has since dissipated with time.

One may wonder if members of the public have been infuriated by the fact that Kgowe was given bail or they have just lost interest in the case.

“The case is ongoing at court and we are still following leads to establish what really transpired that fateful Sunday night and what could have happened to Kerekang’s missing head,” Lesetedi said.

However, the nation and the media is eagerly waiting with hope for the police to recover the missing head or share with them the progress of the case and possibly locate the two suspects who were linked to the case months ago, but have not yet been arrested.
