Meet Roy the comedian

Standing in front of a banter-hungry audience and most notably trying to make them laugh within the first five minutes has never been easy, but Roy has never turned back since his first attempt at the President’s Day Competitions in 2015.
He now has the ability to tickle our ribs without any physical contact.
He is not a true master of the craft yet, but joining Major Moves Comedy has surely pushed him to greater heights. In an interview with Showbiz, the funny looking 32-year-old man said Major Moves saw his potential after performing at the 2015 President’s Day Competition. “Since then I have never looked back and I have never missed any of the Major Moves Shows,” he said.
Roy said he now wants to work with the best so that he too can give his best. He said every time before he performs he has to research and remain relevant to the audience by being up to date with current affairs.
“I have to travel now and then. I also read,” he said.
Roy said he is now able to make brilliant social commentary and gain observational skills during every comedy show.
The comedian, who is a qualified Setswana teacher, has a good command in of the language.
“I deliver most of my jokes in Setswana, but I also throw in English in some instances,” he said.
The comedian from Mmathubudukwane said the comedy industry is growing and it could grow better with sponsors coming on board.
“Companies should invest in comedy,” he said. He added that sharing the stage with big names locally and internationally has inspired him to work hard and aspire to reach the highest level.
“Working with the best comedians makes you a better comedian,” he said.
Roy began his comedy career in 2015 at the President’s Day Competitions where he scooped third position at regional level. Later that year he performed at the Francistown Comedy and Poetry night. He also performed at Cresta Bosele Letlhafula Day as the MC.
He has also performed at the Mahalapye Home Coming comedy night alongside Mawee, Phenyo ‘The Master’ Phaladi, Rikonde and Zozo.
This year he took second position at the President’s Day Competitions comedy finals. Recently in August, Roy performed at the Heavy Weight International Comedy Festival sharing the stage with international comedians like Mashabela and Tap the Guy.
For someone who started last year, it has been a fast and furious journey for Roy and he is slowly earning the stripes of a genius.
