Man slays girlfriend, hangs himself

The incident happened on Friday when the rightful tenant of the house was away. The deceased man was from the northeast, and the woman is from Mmadinare.

The two were known lovers. Their relationship started on one of the previous visits of the man to Mmadinare. When he committed the alleged crime, the man was on another visit to his brother.

According to the preliminary investigations, the police said they discovered a bloodied axe and a knife next to the woman’s lifeless body that they suspect were used in the brutal murder.

Senior superintendent Bonosi Molapisi said both the deceased were confirmed dead at the Mmadinare Hospital. Investigations in the matter are ongoing, and the bodies of the two are still undergoing postmortem.

“The scene of the crime was shocking. The woman was violently abused. She had devastating slashes and wounds and blood was all over, hence we suspect the axe and knife that we found in the house were used in the suspected murder,” he said.

Molapisi said it was disturbing that the case was the second of a similar nature that they had registered in their jurisdiction in under two weeks since the year began.

“We continue to encourage people to seek help when they have differences in their relationships. It is frightening that we have already recorded two cases of passion killings.”

He said the other case was reported on New Year’s Day at the Selebi Phikwe Police Station.  The murder took place at Semotswane cattlepost near Mmadinare.

A 26-year-old man of Mmadinare allegedly strangled to death his 24-year-old lover, also of Mmadinare, with a rope. The suspect is detained to assist the police in the investigations.

“We are trying to establish the cause of the alleged murder, but at the moment we are relying on the evidence from the suspect.  It is not yet clear what could have led to the murder and we are looking for other witnesses that can assist in the matter,” he said.
