Molefhi Appreciates Need For Data Protection Legislation

Giving a keynote address at a recent Continuity SA Botswana’s 10-year anniversary celebration, Molefhi said there is need for proper legislation on data protection and freedom of information. The Selebi Phikwe East legislator said this at a time where the Freedom of Information Bill has been brought before Parliament in the past, but never saw the light of day.
The minister told delegates at the anniversary that there is need for both the government and the private sector to embrace business continuity and risk management where proper legislation will come handy in the process.
The culture to embrace business continuity management and risk management in the country was said to still be lagging behind. Therefore, Molefhi said Continuity SA Botswana has to be applauded for its efforts in helping to build a culture of risk management, business resilience and data recovery among the business community and governance in the country.
Molefhi appreciated that Continuity SA Botswana is in a tough business that is still not understood by a lot of stakeholders.
“There is still need to develop confidence and attract the right attention among the clients,” Molefhi said to Continuity SA Botswana representatives at the anniversary. The minister said the government will continue to provide the right infrastructure for the industry.
He added that with collaboration from the Botswana Innovation Hub, government is working on a project to develop a data centre.
“We are also working around the clock to make e-government service to be up to scratch,” Molefhi assured the delegates.
He said government has also invested ‘heavily’ in internet infrastructure to improve accessibility to potential consumers such as the business community and household clients. Molefhi said he wants to see internet usage improving in the country and consumers using their gadgets to their full capacity.
He said he is also gratified that Continuity SA Botswana has in their business process donated some ICT equipment to some schools as part of their social corporate responsibility initiative.
Continuity SA Botswana provides services such as hosting, bandwith, availability, standby, infrastructure services, continuity training and business continuity management advisory. In his brief welcome remarks, the company’s managing director, Jacob Mothupi said the 10-year anniversary celebration comes at a time when the country celebrates 50 years of independence.
