The JSC advertised a post of a High Court Judge in August, which reportedly attracted so many applicants from the legal fraternity. Mmegi has learnt that amongst the short-listed candidates are Itumeleng Segopolo, Otto Itumeleng, acting Judge, Godfrey Radijeng and Thato Mujaji.

Segopolo has been a lawyer for 29 years and will be trying his luck for the second time. The last time was in 2013 when the JSC had instead recommended Godfrey Nthomiwa to President Ian Khama to appoint latter as the Judge. In September 2015, Radijeng was appointed the acting Judge at the Lobatse High Court. The appointment followed Khama’s suspension of four High Court Judges, Key Dingake, Modiri Letsididi, Mercy Garekwe and Ranier Busang over allegations of misconduct. Radijeng, a former University of Botswana (UB) law lecturer, is a Director of Compliance and Monitoring at the Botswana Communications Regulatory Authority (BOCRA).

The Harvard Law School-educated Radijeng also taught law at the UB for a decade before joining BOCRA. Mujaji, a former magistrate, she now works as a counsel at the Attorney General’s Chambers. She has 22 years of experience in the industry. The other candidate, Itumeleng has 10 years experience and is a managing partner at his law firm in Gaborone. The JSC secretary, Michael Motlhabi could not be drawn to discuss the appointment of the Judges. When responding to a Mmegi questionnaire, Motlhabi said that the proceedings of the JSC are confidential and any appointment will be made public at the appropriate time.
