The Minister of Infrastructure and Housing Development, Nonofo Molefhi told Parliament this week that given the processes that have to take place before the current tenants are relocated to a new place, a period of a maximum of five years is envisaged before the matter is concluded.

Molefhi was answering a question from Jwaneng-Mabutsane MP, Shawn Ntlhaile who wanted to know if the minister was aware that the BHC low cost houses in a high density Unit 1 at Jwaneng town, leased to Jwaneng Town Council (JTC) are not electrified and what action is being taken to electrify them and if there are any plans to upgrade them.

“It is true the houses are not electrified and the houses in question are very small, old and of out-dated designs, nearing the end of their economic use although situated in a very prime location of the town.

There are 180 units in total leased to various entities at monthly rental of P174. Seventy-eight units are leased to JTC, 51 to Botswana Government, 30 units to Water Utilities Corporation, 17 occupied by Botswana Power Corporation and Botswana Telecommunication Corporation and four units are leased to individuals,” Molefhi said.

Molefhi said there are no plans to upgrade the units and electrify them. However, the corporation intends to redevelop the whole plot with a view to maximising its potential in terms of the quality of the development and the additional number of Batswana the site could accommodate. “Consultations are on going with the tenants and other stakeholders, especially JTC for relocation of these tenants,” he said.
