To fully exploit Lobatse’s spatial economic advantages, on April 11, 2016 Lobatse Town Council and Cambridge Investments (Pty) Ltd signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to facilitate and fast-track three large- scale projects in Lobatse which are seen as vital to Lobatse’s economic development.
These projects include:
1. A ‘Centre of Excellence’ Hospitality & Tourism School Cluster including Hospitality & Tourism School, hotel/casino, conference centre, pari-urban game park, cultural village and caravan park;
2. The Lobatse International Airport City including an international airport and adjacent industrial and commercial development. CIL has offered to donate to Government the land required for the Lobatse International Airport which will be operated as a public airport open to all;
3. Residential development to provide housing for Lobatse generally and for the above two projects.
In terms of the MoU, Lobatse Town Council will endeavour to facilitate and fast-track planning and development approvals and the provision of enabling external municipal services and infrastructure for the projects and Cambridge will make +/- 2,000 hectares of its industrial, residential and commercial zoned freehold land within Lobatse Township available for the projects. Cambridge will also be responsible for driving the property development and marketing sides. A Joint Working Group including Lobatse Town Council, Cambridge and other stakeholders has been created to co-ordinate and fast-track implementation of the MOU.
“Our strategy is to provide local and international investors with the unique opportunity to acquire and develop sizeable portions of industrial, residential and commercial zoned freehold land within the Township of Lobatse.” stated Cambridge’s Executive Chairman Philip Fischer.
“With the addition of the approved Northern By-pass Road and the proposed upgrading of Alpha Airfield to international airport status, Lobatse will be able to realise its true potential both as a regional multi-modal (air/road/rail) transportation hub and as a commercial and industrial development cluster.”
According to the mayor of Lobatse, Malebogo Kruger, “This MoU is Lobatse Town Council’s proactive response to government’s mandate for townships to take a leadership role in promoting their own economic development even to the extent of investing in suitable projects.”
