DIS director general, Peter Magosi has confirmed to The Monitor that Kgosi has been released even though investigations are still on going.

“We have finished our search and we are currently going through what we have uncovered from all the searches. But he has been released,” said the DIS boss on Sunday. Magosi further revealed that Kgosi is free to travel anywhere he wants as they have returned his passport and is under no travel restrictions.

The DIS boss said he could not tell exactly when they would take Kgosi to court to face his charges since they are still investigating.

Magosi also rubbished reports that there are, “20 warrants of arrest that include six ministers and other high profile figures” saying, “That’s nonsense”. Kgosi was arrested by the DIS in a sting operation last Tuesday night at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport on arrival from a posh wedding of Choppies CEO Ramachandran Ottapathu’s daughter in Thrissur, India. The investigators have not revealed his charges, but sources say the arrest warrant mentioned tax evasion. On Tuesday night, Kgosi was sent to Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) military police holding cells where he was held overnight.

The ex-spy chief was on Wednesday taken to his Phakalane home where the DIS agents alongside the Botswana Unified Revenue Service conducted a search. They later moved to his other properties including two houses at Gaborone Central, another one at Gaborone West and two farms; one at Maboane and the other at Sentlhane, near Mmokolodi. Reports also say the investigators were also looking for some “high value assets” that belong to the DIS that Kgosi apparently did not return to the agency when he was fired last May.

Sources close to the investigations say that “stashes of cash in foreign currencies, few pistols, and what looks like an intruder system into DIS network” were uncovered in the search. Magosi has however declined to comment on the inventory of their findings saying it would compromise their investigation.

On Wednesday night during Day One of the search, the DIS boss said they were “very happy” with what they have found in the house.
