Septuagenarian rape-murder suspects further remanded

The duo, Modisakgotla Keganeditse, 24, and Moabi Morwalela, 21, are alleged to have robbed Grace Keakantse, 70, of a mobile phone worth P249 at her place of residence in Area W during the wee hours of November 17, 2018 before proceeding to rape and murder her.

The accused appeared before magistrate Kaveri Kapeko for mention, as the substantive magistrate in the matter Kose Makobo was not present.

Prosecutor Mandla Simon from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) informed the court that both the accused are still remanded in custody.

He made an application for the accused to be further remanded in custody.

Magistrate Makobo had denied the accused bail as the prosecution was awaiting results from the police forensic laboratory in Gaborone.

When asked to respond to the application made by the state, Morwalela shocked the court when he feigned that he was not privy to the fact that he was denied bail.

“It is my first time to hear that the magistrate denied us bail,” Morwalela said.

Keganeditse pleaded with the magistrate to give him bail saying that no one is taking care of his child who has just started Standard One and has no school uniform.

“I am asking for bail because I want to do piece jobs so that I can buy school uniform for my child,” Keganeditse said.

At the end of the accused’s brief appearance in court, Magistrate Kapeko ruled that the accused should be further remanded in custody and advised them to apply for bail before the substantive magistrate in the matter.

The accused persons are due in court on February 11, 2019 for another mention.
