Rail Giant claim top spot

Rail Giants were playing their opening games since the launch of the league in Sowa Town last month. The second round of the games were played in Serowe a fortnight ago and Rail Giants joined the fray in the third round of games in Selibe-Phikwe.
Giants’ men and women won all their games over the weekend to move to the top of the standings. Giants’ men opened their account with a 6-0 win against home side Phikwe Comets, beat Scramblers 10-4, walloped Deltas 10-0 and wrapped up their spectacular start with a 3-0 win against rejuvenated Ghetto Yankees.
Likewise their women team foiled the home side 5-0 in the opening game, beat Scramblers 8-5, Deltas 15-4 and wrapped up with 12-2 against Yankees. Both the Rail Giants teams are leading their respective logs with eight points from the four games. The men’s side has a 25 run difference and the women with 28. Meanwhile, last season’s whipping boys Ghetto Yankees have turned their fortunes around.
After the weekend games, Yankees women occupy second position and the men are third. Team manager, Telly Rasesigo said they are on course for a championship qualification.
“Overall I am impressed,” he said. “We have put ourselves in a good position for a top eight qualification. Our final games will be here at home and we are looking forward to finishing up at home.” Yankees men are equal on points with the leaders and have a better superior run difference of 36, however they are below the two leaders, Giants and Comets thanks to a game against rule. Comets also on eight points, have a 23 run difference.
Both Yankinnabes, as the Francistown team is affectionately known, are currently the best scoring teams in the northern league, with the women superior on 58 run forward against the log leaders 40. The men’s have 48 runs forward against Rail Giants’ 29 and Comets’ 33. This weekend Yankinabe succumbed to a Rail Giants storm in both the men and the women teams, both registering their second losses in six outings.
The Yankinabes took advantage of the feeble Deltas in their only other games of the weekend. Yankinabe men beat Deltas 11-1 and their women won 6-1 against Deltas. In other games, Comets men beat Deltas 13-2 and Deltas women 6-2 Comets.
