BMC were the first to bat and scored two runs through Keneilwe Moshoboro and Masego Seanogano.
The ‘Meat Girls’ enjoyed the lead with BDF failing to score in the first inning. BMC continued with their good play into the second inning scoring a run to extend their lead to 3-0.
BDF found their way into the scoreboard after Gakenosi Makata and Serati Osenotse scored double runs to make it 3-2.
BMC made catching errors and that gave BDF an opportunity to score another run through Ethel Mongwewarona, to level matters at 3-3.
Panic set in the BMC camp, as BDF went for the kill. Sharon Ntshebe put BDF in the lead scoring a run to make it 4-3.
It was now clear that the army women meant business and were taking the war to their opponent.
At the end of the second inning, BDF had scored 16 runs. BMC attempted to stage a comeback in the third inning after scoring two runs, but that was not enough to stop the marauding BDF.
BMC coach, Mmoloki Maphane said his game plan was to minimise the runs that they were conceding and get batters on bases. “We wanted to slow down the game, score many runs as possible and manage it, like we did when the game started and took the lead. “Unfortunately, we failed to hold on to the lead and BDF fought back. They quickly overpowered us and we had no way back,” he said.
BDF coach, Mothusi Shalobane said he was excited about the come-from-behind win. He said he adopted the short game plan after realising that power play was not working for them. “We rely much on endurance and when a team has scored certain runs, we can come back. My players have good stamina compared to most of our opponents.
“BMC had only three players who could cause problems and my advantage was that I had enough depth,” he said.
In another interesting women’s match, stubborn Eagles stretched Police IX, in a 16-12 defeat. At one point, Eagles enjoyed a good lead, and it appeared they would fly away with the match, but the Cops dug deep to win 16-12. Eagles are made up of mostly players under the age of 21, who had, a day earlier, beaten Dinare 16-6.
