Danceline Studios Raise Funds For Upcoming Trip

Therefore, the dance-up festival was geared towards raising funds for the trip, which includes transportation and accommodation among others.

Even though the dance night did not attract many people, the dancers on the night did their best to entertain the few who came.

The dance-up was dominated by Latin American dances, which are not popular in Botswana.

Every couple who came on stage showed   that there is enough talent in Botswana, especially in dances like Chacha and Samba. As they stepped forward and backwards, the crowd was cheering and admiring the skills they saw on stage.

Dancers as young as 13 years of age also showcased their talent on stage to show everyone that they will get better with time.

Amongst the dancers on the night were a youthful couple who was the main attraction due to their unrivalled raw talent. Refilwe Mmopi and Kabelo Dibe are the best locally and had been competing in southern Africa where they also made a huge impact.

Mmopi told Showtime that they organised the show to raise funds as well as raise awareness because Latin American ballroom dance is not well understood in Botswana. She said they were not satisfied with the attendance, but hoped that those who were there would spread the word and invite others to future shows.

“Right now we want sponsors so that we can compete outside southern Africa in bigger shows,” she said. For his part, Dibe said most of the dances on the night like Rumba and Samba are part of the dance competition.

He said they were playing around with different dances to show variety. He said they are ranked number one locally and are champions in some competitions in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“We are the current champions in southern Africa, which includes countries like Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Zimbabwe and South Africa,” he explained.

The couple has also indicated that despite the huge amount of skills they have, they are doing this part time. “It feels like full-time because we never break on it. We practice a lot,” Dibe expressed. Danceline Studios will head to Johannesburg for a dance competition on December 3, 2016.
