Motiki eager to play again after accident

The road mishap, which happened last October just before Sowa, claimed the life of Lovemore Murirwa and left two other colleagues injured.

Murirwa was behind the wheel at the time of the accident when his car, a Toyota Alteza, veered off the road and hit a tree. Motiki sustained serious injuries to his head and chest.

He spent some time at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital here and was at one point admitted at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU). At the time, there were fears that the striker may not play football again.

“I am currently at home (in Gaborone) recovering. I am going for my medical check-up in two weeks. The feedback I will get from doctors after the check up will determine when I will be ready to start playing football. I will definitely play. It is my biggest wish to start playing as soon as possible. At the moment I feel relatively fine,” he said with optimism.

The 24-year-old striker was released from hospital towards the end of last year. Motiki is still contracted to Flamingoes until the end of the season.

“The club has been paying my salary since I got injured,” he said.

Flamingoes chairperson, Rebagamang Sekgekge said the club is also paying the salary for second choice goalkeeper, Ogopotse Tshule who was amongst the four players who were involved in the accident.

“We will continue monitoring their progress. If they are ready to play as per their medical reports they will definitely be welcomed back into the team. The players will continue getting their salaries until the end of their respective contracts,” he said.

Sekgekge also said that Tshule, who sustained mild injuries during the accident, is on the right path to recovery. The fourth player escaped with minor injuries.

Last season, Motiki, and Murirwa, played a key role for Flamingoes, in what was arguably the club’s best season.

He produced sublime and incomparable moments of brilliance that won a sizeable number of games for Flamingoes.

The team, which is backed by Botswana Ash, reached the First Division North (FDN) play-offs for the first time since it was established 25 years ago.
