Frustrated Makhwengwe quits BFA

His manager, Mabuo Motsamai recently told Mmegi Sport about Makhwengwe’s frustrations amid strained working relations with his boss, BFA technical director, Ben Kgomela.

On Tuesday, the BFA public relations officer, Tumo Mpatane announced Makhwengwe, together with referees manager, Dintwe Dintwe, were leaving the association.

Makhwengwe has served BFA for 17 years while Dintwe was with the association for five years and left last Friday.

“We would like to warmly extend our appreciation to these two employees for working tirelessly towards the development of football in Botswana and for the determination and effort they have shown towards football,” read the press statement.

The relationship between Makhwengwe and his superior, Kgomela was primarily responsible for the former Gaborone United coach’s decision to abruptly end his 17-year-old stay at BFA.

“There were relationship issues and issues were getting more complicated. Makhwengwe at work is Kgomela’s junior but at CAF level, as an instructor, Makhwengwe is above Kgomela. This was the cause of endless friction between the two,” a source said.

Makhwengwe is reportedly on his way to politics as a certain group is lobbying him to stand although it remains unclear for which position or party.  He is said to also be in the process of opening a coaches’ academy in Gaborone, while his options for coaching remain open.

He is assisting Prisons XI at the moment.  Meanwhile, Dintwe is said to have left after the referees’ strike crippled the start of the BTC Premiership season, with four matches postponed when officials failed to turn up.

“Where did you get that?  As far as I know there was no strike,” Dintwe said when contacted for comment yesterday.
