Keekae dropped the bombshell on Friday following reports that he was forced to resign.

Sport Monitor is informed that BRU executive committee held a meeting early last week where they asked Keekae to go before the end of the week.

However, when contacted for comment, Keekae said he resigned at his own free will.

He becomes the second president to jump ship following the resignation of Dave Gilbert. The BRU elections were held in 2016, but to date there is no vice president-technical.

The secretary general, Ernest Mantsi has left town and since the treasurer passed away last year, a replacement has not been found.

Despite that, allegations are rife that former BNSC treasurer, Boitshoko Tsiane has been appointed as BRU treasurer.

“It is fine, they have won. We allow ourselves as people and nation that we are not good enough. We allow ourselves to be bought to fight our own brothers. Unfortunately, I could not stand for that hence I decided to quit,” he said.

BRU vice president administration, Bob Lekan said he was not aware of Keekae’s resignation. Lekan said Keekae has not informed rugby leadership about his decision. 

Rugby clubs were also shocked to learn about his resignation. One of the affiliates said the resignation came at bad time when there is impending Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The affiliate felt that the resignation was a crisis for the Union.  However, some of the affiliates welcomed the resignation saying it is a blessing in disguise. 

“We should be taking rugby forward and now this happens. We failed to have an AGM for the past two years, but under proper governance that should not happen. We wonder why that happened. But we hope Lekan does not become president again,” the source said.

Keekae is expected to release a statement today announcing his resignation.  BDF Cheetahs chairperson, Farid Pandor is tipped to take over the reins as acting president until elections are held.
