Tshireletso Clears Kanye Stadium Mix-Up

The Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development Botlogile Tshireletso denied the allegation raised by Kgosi Seate Marumo (Kanye region) at Ntlo Ya Dikgosi on Tuesday. 

on behalf of the MYSC, Tshireletso said Kanye stadium has not been relegated to a mini-stadium instead the mini-stadium project earmarked for Kanye North in the current financial year is part of a new project of contracting mini-stadiums in 10 constituencies. “The new project includes boundary wall, ablutions, change rooms, kiosks, football pitch with artificial turf, athletic track, netball courts and volleyball courts,” Tshireletso said.

She further elaborated that local authorities in each of the 10 constituencies have been invited to identify land for construction of the facilities. Regrettably, Kanye North is the only constituency that has lagged behind in the development, having failed to identify a site for the construction of the mini-stadium.

Marumo argued that it is the same place that the mini-stadium is being constructed on, but initially it was reserved for the main stadium hence why the question is raised if it is relegated to a mini-stadium.

“This is a new project of which is not related to the National Development Plan (NDP) 8 where a sport complex was earmarked for Kanye. At that time, the sport complexes were earmarked for District Headquarters. However, due to financial constraints, some of the proposed projects including the Kanye Sport Complex (Kanye Stadium), could not be implemented,” Tshireletso said.

Bangwaketse were promised a sports complex long before the announcement of constructing the Makwala Sport Complex which is now in progress. The government planned to build sport complexes nationwide to bolster sport in each constituency. The assistant minister told the House that due to financial constraints there were no plans to construct a fully-fledged stadium for Kanye.
