Soldier, police officer fingered in nightclub murder

The murder comes just a week after a presidential pardonee was arrested in connection with another murder at the popular club at Maruapula shopping complex.

According to eyewitnesses, four men, amongst them a soldier and a police officer had a scuffle with the deceased outside the club. The club bouncer who spoke to Mmegi said, “We were getting ready to leave the club. We had closed about an hour back when I left the building and I saw the men attack the deceased”.

“There were about four of them. The other three managed to escape in a car and the other was left stranded. He tried to run away but the people caught him,” he said.

The man continued: “Among the gang that attacked the deceased, one is a soldier stationed in Selebi-Phikwe, whilst the other is a police officer here in Gaborone but I do not know their names.” Efforts to get a comment from the Gaborone Central Police station were futile since weekend.

Mmegi team visited the distraught family of the deceased who confirmed the incident.

The grandmother to the deceased, Makama Choma said her grandson had left home in the wee hours of that morning for Zoom night club where he was to meet others to attend the funeral of their mate who was also brutally axed to death the other weekend.

“They were to meet at the club and leave early for the funeral. A few hours later a boy from the neighborhood came to tell us that he was killed in a fight.”

“They stabbed him twice with a crew driver under the breast areas, on both sides,” Choma said.

A suspect who is in police custody is expected to appear before Extension 2 Magistrates Court today.
