When briefing the media recently during the tour of the Mmamashia treatment plant,  Chief Executive Officer of WUC Mmetla Masire said the three villages have been dealt a heavy blow as the generators pumping water and primarily supplying Molepolole and Thamaga are reportedly dysfunctional; a crisis solely induced by power failure that also reign big in the areas.

“We are going to be opening the Kanye, Moshupa and Thamaga line this year. It is very important that we start preparing for more water to reach the Southern region of Botswana. This is a very strategic project that has multiple purposes,” Masire sai.

“The primary purpose is to get more water for the greater Gaborone areas. Our strategy for the North-South carrier is to extend the water to other parts of Botswana such as Molepole, Thamaga, Goodhope and Kanye. In order for us to be able to deliver on our strategy, we need to have a mechanism for pumping more water to Gaborone.”

This remark by the CEO came as a relief to the business community in these areas as the water cut has negatively affected their businesses. In most of these areas, this has hit hard small businesses that were forced to close shop.

Business Monitor has established that multiple businesses in Thamaga and Moshupa especially car washes, restaurants and tuck shops dealing with fast food were forced to close down as a result of inadequate water supply in both the villages.

This publication caught up with an owner of a car wash in Thamaga, who preferred to be anonymus  and told this publication that WUC’s failure to supply the village with water meant no business and closure for his business.

“I closed my business because of water shortage. My business is entirely dependent on water as I use it to wash cars.

The car wash business does not make much money and I cannot afford to buy water from Choppies or get it for free at Water Utilities Corporation, as my financials do not allow me to do that. Right now, there is a restaurant not far away from where I am operating which is also closed because of the same water crisis”, he worried.

Business Monitor has also learnt that car wash are not supposed to be run by water collected from homes but rather collected from boreholes, dams or wells. This has left many aggrieved as they claim the development is out of their depth.
