DTCB  accumulated six points during the preliminary round held at the University of Botswana (UB) over the weekend. The club had five boxers including a woman boxer, Keamogetse Kenosi, who overcame Aratwa Kasemang of UB in the women’s light weight (57-60kg). Prisons finished second with four points. Seven clubs, UB, Eastern Military Garrison, Glen Valley, Mafika, Maun, SSKB and Thebephatshwa finished with two points each. Gantsi has only managed a single point from the weekend assignment.

The competition produced a lot of upsets with Tumelo Ramorathodi of Thebephatshwa eliminating national team boxer, Otukile Mohammed of Mafika in the early stages of the tournament in the fly-weight category (52kg).

Another prominent boxer, Thabiso Mpolokeng of 125 boxing club failed to proceed to the second round of the championship after being eliminated in the preliminary stage.

The semi-final and finals are scheduled for the weekend in Gaborone. One of the bouts to watch out will be a fight between Kefentse Molalapata of UB against Kabelo Bagwasi of DTCB.

BoBA spokesperson, Kenny Maragana told Mmegi Sport yesterday that the level of competition witnessed over the weekend is a good sign of development.

“Boxers gave their all and for a national team boxer to be eliminated, it goes to show that we are in the right direction. This is what we expect in the National Championship. Upsets should be registered, new names must be recorded,” he said. Maragana said even women boxers came to the party and there are signs of improvement. He said the semi-final is expected to be much tougher, especially between DTCB and Prisons. He said the two clubs have shown determination in the championship.
