Lover's Tiff Lands Man In Court For Murder

The police suspect that a lovers’ spat may have led to the tragic death of the girlfriend.

When the accused appeared in court on Friday, inspector Kenneth Edward applied for a plea in the matter to be reserved because investigations had just commenced.

“We are yet to record statements from potential witnesses. The investigating officer in the matter is at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital helping with postmortem processes,” said Edward. He then applied for the accused to be remanded in custody pending police investigations.Asked by Magistrate Game Mooketsi if he had anything to say in relation to the prosecution’s application that he be remanded in custody, Mbenda said: “I have nothing to say”.

Mooketsi then remanded Mbenda in custody until February 18 when the accused will appear in court for status hearing. According to the Tonota police station commander, Kelebogile Kaisara, Mbenda allegedly followed Keobatile and her cousin who were on an excursion to look for employment.

“Mbenda then asked his girlfriend and her cousin to wait for him. When he reached the deceased and her cousin, he asked his girlfriend to return the money that he earlier on given her. The deceased’s cousin then tried to intervene. Mbenda then withdrew a knife and threatened to stab his girlfriend’s cousin with it,” Kaisara alleged.

The deceased’s cousin, Kaisara said, then ran for dear life.

Kaisara added: “Mbenda returned to his girlfriend and picked a log, which he then used to repeatedly assault his girlfriend with. The deceased was carrying her small child with Mbenda on her back. The child fell off the deceased’s back, but Mbenda continued to assault his girlfriend with the log until she died”.
