Rugby committee faces the axe

Rugby affiliates will make key decisions on Saturday

Rugby affiliates will make key decisions on Saturday

The motion comes at a time when the Union is going through turbulent times, which has seen the successive resignation of two presidents. Two years have passed without an AGM with the last one held in 2016.  The previous meeting flopped, as there was no quorum.

UB Rhinos chairperson, Thatayaone Malele said affiliates should unite and pass a motion of no confidence against the executive.

“The executive has failed us. They made false promises to us when they campaigned for elections. Some promised to bring sponsors, but nothing happened. We cannot be expected to wait for next year,” he said. Malele said elections should be called now because the Union is in a mess. He said if the executive were to impose a new president, they would refuse.

He said the executive had promised to develop a plot allocated to rugby, but this has remained a pie in the sky. Regarding the resignation of Dave Gilbert and Lesedi Keekae, Malele said there must be something wrong in the executive.

“We cannot have two presidents resigning before the end of their term. The executive must be put on the spot and explain to us exactly what is happening,” Malele said.

Gaborone Hogs manager, Lynn Warburton said she could only support or oppose the motion after listening to the deliberations from the executive. “We have to see plans that they have moving forward and the team that they have before we can act. But we expect clarity on a number of issues,” she said.

Warburton said they expect to be given a clear plan for the year.

For his part, BRU secretary general, Ernest Mantsi said the committee is ready for the AGM.

“We are ready for the AGM and we expect all our affiliates to attend. The leadership would be notified about the person who will take over as interim president. The executive is empowered by the constitution to co-opt a person they see fit to take rugby forward,” Mantsi said.

New BRU treasurer, Boitshoko Tsiane is expected to be introduced to the affiliates and probably present his maiden report.  Two financial reports for 2017 and 2018 would be presented to the affiliates.
