Murder accused remains silent

The state alleges that Benjamin Disang, 34, murdered Batang Cheche at Matenge village in the North East District on March 22 in 2015. 

A misunderstanding allegedly led to the killing. 

Disang confirmed through his attorney Wame Tafa that he will remain silent after his legal options were explained to him. Disang, who is out on bail, allegedly killed his girlfriend using a log. 

The right to remain silent covers a number of issues centred on the right of the accused or the defendant to refuse to comment or provide an answer when questioned, either prior to or during legal proceedings in a court of law. 

This can be the right to avoid self-incrimination or the right to remain silent when questioned. 

Justice Gaolapelwe Ketlogetswe will deliver judgement on March 22, 2019.
