Miners march to Khama

The petition is meant to sensitise the President on the current state of affairs in relation to the closure of BCL and Tati Nickel mines, which have left at least 6,000 mine workers jobless.
“Yes, we will be handing over the petition at Notwane Grounds today and we have secured four buses – three from Selebi Phikwe and one from Tati for our members to travel to Gaborone,” BMWU president Jack Tlhagale said.
At press time, BMWU was not sure who will receive the petition on behalf of the President. However, what was made clear to them was the fact that they should go nowhere near the Office of the President at the Government Enclave.
“The private secretary to the President, George Tlhalerwa said that the petition cannot be delivered at the Office of the President, and will be delivered at Notwane Grounds. He went to consult his colleagues on who should receive the petition on behalf of the President,” Tlhagale said.
The march is scheduled to start from Notwane Grounds along Jawara Road, past South Ring, Kaunda Road, Khama Crescent, Queens Road (Main Mall), Churchill Road and back to Notwane Grounds.
BCL Mine was placed under provisional liquidation three weeks ago, a move that has sparked a series of conspiracy theories from various quarters, including the affected miners, politicians and even pupils in primary schools. Tlhalerwa could not be reached for comment as his phone went unanswered and finally off air by press time.
