At its Shakawe conference in July this year, the BCP indicated that it would review the Vision 2016, compile its successes, failures as well as provide alternative opinions on what should have been done to avoid the failures of the Vision.

The robust review was supposed to have been completed just after Independence. The BCP planned to use the results to conduct public lectures for the benefit of party members and the public.

In its preliminary analysis, the BCP has said Vision 2016 was a failure especially in the areas of education and economy.

Yesterday BCP president Dumelang Saleshando said the party decided to temporarily halt the review of the Vision to focus on other pressing party matters.

“Immediately after our conference in Shakawe we had to deal with coalition negotiations with Umbrella For Democratic Change. This meant that we did not have enough financial human resources to handle the assessment of the Vision,” Saleshando said.

Saleshando also said the party chose to focus on raising awareness against Electronic Voting Machines (EVM). This came after President Ian Khama signed amendments to the Electoral Act recently, sparking demonstrations from the opposition. The passing of the amendments means electronic voting will be implemented in the 2019 general elections. However, opposition parties see EVM as a tool the Botswana Democratic Party  intends to use to retain power.

The BCP leader hinted that the party could take government to court for not consulting on EVM.

“We already have an opinion on what action we should take. We are however, still working on finer details with our legal team. We should definitely be done with all the issues regarding EVM before the end of the year,” Saleshando said, adding that it was still early to elaborate on the course of action.
