Those who are not intimate about fashion never really ask the most important question, ‘what are you wearing?” The world of arts and fashion has always been in touch with the world of waste.

With the term Eco-Fashion being the new force in fashion industry these days, various brands have used recycled materials to minimise waste at the same time crafting skillfully rare products.  Waste materials have become a source of inspiration for various designers and they are now using the opportunity to show their creativity. While Jesus turned water into wine, designers are turning waste into beautiful garments.

This is now a new and sustainable vision in the world of arts and fashion. According to the Ethical Fashion Forum, Eco-fashion is a broader term used for all clothing, fabrics and accessories that have been manufactured in an environmentally conscious way.

For the first time ever, local company Prime Projects will host the first ever Eco-Couture fashion show at Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort tomorrow. Mothusi Lesolle will creatively direct the fashion show.

In an interview with Showbiz, the marketing manager of Prime Projects Whitney Molefi said they came up with idea to host the show inline with the Zero Waste symposium that will be held on October 27-28.

Molefi said they want to dramatically reduce the volumes of waste being sent to landfills. “We want to create an awareness that waste can be used and turned into wealth,” she said. Molefi said they could make a fortune out of waste materials.

She added that they have engaged eight local designers to make garments out of waste. “Our designers are students from Limkokwing University and University of Botswana,” she said. Molefi said the designers are required to make three garments each and the products are made from 90% waste.

She said the designers will be competing and the winner will walk away with P10,000. “We have received support from entertainers and they will be volunteering their services,” she highlighted.

She said Empire Models will provide modeling services for the showcasing of the garments. Molefi said they are now planning to make it an annual event.

Scar, Samba T and ATI will be performing while the DJs for the night will be DJ Kuchi, Chef Gustos and Piet Da DJ. The MC will be King B of Yarona FM. The standard ticket for the show is P250 and the VIP is P750. The after party will be held at Cigar Lounge in Phakalane.
