“The games would also contribute economically to the country through sports tourism as the visiting countries would be lodging in the area. The games are also meant to showcase the cultural diversity in the country. This would also encourage a healthy lifestyle for our employees,” Ramatlhakwana said at a press briefing in Gaborone yesterday.

The tournament attracts teams from Botswana, Lesotho and Namibia while South Africa cancelled its participation at the last minute for unexplained reasons. The three countries will compete in five sporting codes amongst others; football, netball, volleyball, athletics and a marathon. “We would also have fun games like the egg race and tug of war. We would like to encourage the public to come in numbers and support our teams,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Re Ba Bona Ha football and netball teams in Molepolole will be donated playing kits from organisers of the games.

Speaking to Mmegi Sport after the press briefing SAPOA games organising chairperson, Keletso Sera said they decided to buy playing kits for teams after approaching the Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) development programme officer to enquire where they can lend a helping hand. “We approached the Re Ba Bona Ha officer in the region. They informed us there is a great need with the under 12 to under 17 teams. The situation is so bad that the youngsters do not have the right playing footwear. We then decided to assist football and netball teams first. We may also buy playing equipment for the volleyball teams so they will not feel left out,” he said.  He also said only the Re Ba Bona Ha teams will benefit from the donations.
